The Entrepreneur’s Most Valuable Tool

Several times each week I interact with people who enrolled in the Break Free University because they are working to make the mental and emotional transition from being an employee to being a successfully self employed entrepreneur.

Most of them tell me they were highly successful in the corporate world and yet struggle to accomplish their own personal dreams, desires and goals.

Most of the people I encountered in my own 20+ years in the corporate environment were extremely bright and creative, so it is no surprise to me that they would have a craving to run their own business so they can do things “their own way“.

Unfortunately, the workplace is NOT a place for learning how to be the master and commander of your own life, so if you are working to transition yourself from “employee” to “entrepreneur” you must reprogram yourself with a more empowered mindset and more empowering decision-making strategies.

You Must Learn to Embrace Failure as Your Most Valuable Learning Tool.

As “employees” we are highly discouraged from making mistakes and from failing, so we didn’t learn how to process failure in a truly healthy and positive way.

As “employees” we are taught to collaborate on just about every little thing before making a decision, so as entrepreneurs decision-making without collaboration can be a large source of anxiety and self doubt, as well as a major cause for procrastination.

One of the most valuable pieces of advice given to me by my coach was to “fail as fast as possible” — and to do that — you must make and ACT on lots and lots of BAD decisions in order to more quickly figure out the GOOD decisions.

As an entrepreneur it is vital for you to reprogram yourself with internal decision-making strategies that will empower you to move forward with a decision, as opposed to waiting for more research data or collaboration opportunities.

It seems that no matter how smart, educated, experienced or prepared a person is — being a successful entrepreneur takes enormous persistence and tenacity and above all… you MUST be willing to EMBRACE FAILURE AND USE IT AS ONE OF YOUR MOST VALUABLE LEARNING TOOLS.

As always, you can get step-by-step guidance through the Break Free University curriculum.

Here’s to your great Success!

Willpower is Not Enough to Beat Self Sabotage

In 2003 Sandra started thinking it was time for her to leave her long-time corporate career and go out on her own.

She diligently used her willpower and spent many evenings putting together a Plan of Action, building lists of products to create, and making lists of things to include on her website.

So she worked, and she worked, and she worked to bring her dream to life… and suddenly it was 2011 and she was still in her corporate job, still aching to be out on her own.

She told me she felt like she was “showing up” and doing business building activities, but she also admitted that she had something inside her that she allowed to block her success.

Sandra told me that she had tried all sorts of things to stay motivated to achieve success, but found herself in an ever-repeating cycle that started out with self motivation, followed by lots of work, followed by challenges and problems, followed by feeling of defeat and failure.

Does any of this resonate with YOU?

Most of us have something that we work on, and work on, and work on, but never allow ourselves to actually achieve.

Whether you are working on building a business, improving your health, increasing your income, or developing strong relationships, quite often we start out full of excitement, motivation and energy, only to repeat a pattern of self sabotage that keeps us AWAY from the success we seek.

Do you make promises to yourself that sound something like this: “This time it will be different. This time I’ll work even harder. This time I’ll make it!” And you summon up every ounce of your willpower and you start the cycle of self sabotage all over again.

If it was just willpower that was needed, many more people would be successful. Willpower is like an elastic band, the more you force and stretch it, the tighter it gets and the harder it is to hold, until you no longer have the energy to keep it stretched and you let it snap back to its original shape.

Most causes of failure and relapse have more to do with your internal beliefs, many of which you are not even consciously aware of. You see, science has shown that we have 6 areas of the brain, 5 of which are in your subconscious. So if the one-sixth portion of your brain (your conscious mind) wants to change, and the remaining five-sixth of your brain (your subconscious mind) is filled with beliefs that don’t want you to change… Well… guess which one is going to win! The stronger subconscious mind of course!

This is why it is vital for you to do the work to uncover those inner beliefs that are no longer effective in helping you to get what you want. Once you uncover the old beliefs you can change them into healthier, more effective beliefs that will easily and naturally support your efforts to be successful.

In my first conversation with Sandra she told me about the many, many things she had tried over the years in her efforts to put herself into alignment with achieving success, but sadly, none had really made much of a difference.  And the next thing she told me was the most important part of our entire conversation. She said, “and I am ready now to do the work to break free from my inner self-imposed barriers!”

Is it time for you?

Have you run out of “willpower”?

Are you ready to break free?

Treat yourself to a better tomorrow. Break free from your self-imposed barriers today and live the happy, successful life you deserve!

When you are ready, you can get step-by-step guidance through the Break Free University curriculum.

Step Out of Your History to Break Free of Self Sabotage

I’d like to start this post by telling you a story.

A man feared his wife wasn’t hearing as well as she used to and he thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family doctor to discuss the problem. The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give the doctor a better idea about her hearing loss.

Here’s what you do,” said the Doctor, “stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response.”

That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he was in the den. He says to himself, “I’m about 40 feet away, let’s see what happens.”

Then in a normal tone he asks, ‘Honey, what’s for dinner?”

No response..

So the husband moves closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife and repeats, “Honey, what’s for dinner?”

Still no response.

Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20 feet from his wife and asks, “Honey, what’s for dinner?”

Again no response.

So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away.. “Honey, what’s for dinner?”

Again there is no response.

So he walks right up behind her… “Honey, what’s for dinner?”

(I just love this)……

“Ralph, for THE FIFTH time, CHICKEN!”

How many times have you projected your own assumptions and self-imposed rules onto situations? How many times have you continued down a path not seeing that your own beliefs and perceptions were taking you miles off course?

The fact is that most of our lives are spent reusing the information collected in our formative years. Thus, when anything new enters our arena we immediately go to the past to try to make sense of it.

The reality is that we each live in our own self-invented illusion. We each see our world through some really heavily tinted spectacles. And far too often we act as though we are a hammer and everything that comes in front of us is a nail.

The problem is this: Trying to solve TODAY’S problems with YESTERDAY’S solutions will just keep you STUCK with YESTERDAY’S problems.

So here are a few things to consider:

  • Are you treating your current employer the same way you treated your past employers, but expecting them to treat you differently?

  • Are you making your current love relationships pay for the mistakes of your past love relationships?

  • Are you managing your money the same way today as you did years ago?

  • Are you assuming that the other person is the one with the hearing problem when YOU are actually the one who’s not listening?

How do you find out what you were brought onto this planet to do if all you can do is respond in the same way to whatever is put in front of you?

As Howard Schatz, the famous New York dance photographer, stated in one of his books:

“I told each dancer that when it was easy, it had probably been done before, probably many times. I explained that only when it was so hard that it was nearly impossible were we perhaps close to getting something unique and extraordinary.”

You will BE all that you desire when you start applying new, more effective solutions to the problems and challenges that come into your life!

So I challenge you… I implore you… I beg of you… STEP OUT OF YOUR HISTORY!

Anytime you have a thought that is limiting you or makes you feel bad…

QUESTION IT!

STEP OUT OF YOUR HISTORY!

BE YOUR EXTRAORDINARY SELF!

As always, you can get step-by-step guidance through the Break Free University curriculum.
