Step Out of Your History to Break Free of Self Sabotage

I’d like to start this post by telling you a story.

 

A man feared his wife wasn’t hearing as well as she used to and he thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family doctor to discuss the problem. The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give the doctor a better idea about her hearing loss.

 

Here’s what you do,” said the Doctor, “stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response.”

 

That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he was in the den. He says to himself, “I’m about 40 feet away, let’s see what happens.”

 

Then in a normal tone he asks, ‘Honey, what’s for dinner?”

 

No response..

 

So the husband moves closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife and repeats, “Honey, what’s for dinner?”

 

Still no response.

 

Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20 feet from his wife and asks, “Honey, what’s for dinner?”

 

Again no response.

 

So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away.. “Honey, what’s for dinner?”

 

Again there is no response.

 

So he walks right up behind her… “Honey, what’s for dinner?”

 

 

(I just love this)……

 

 

 

“Ralph, for THE FIFTH time, CHICKEN!”

 

 

How many times have you projected your own assumptions and self-imposed rules onto situations? How many times have you continued down a path not seeing that your own beliefs and perceptions were taking you miles off course?

 

The fact is that most of our lives are spent reusing the information collected in our formative years. Thus, when anything new enters our arena we immediately go to the past to try to make sense of it.

 

The reality is that we each live in our own self-invented illusion. We each see our world through some really heavily tinted spectacles. And far too often we act as though we are a hammer and everything that comes in front of us is a nail.

 

The problem is this: Trying to solve TODAY’S problems with YESTERDAY’S solutions will just keep you STUCK with YESTERDAY’S problems.

 

So here are a few things to consider:

  • Are you treating your current employer the same way you treated your past employers, but expecting them to treat you differently?

  • Are you making your current love relationships pay for the mistakes of your past love relationships?

  • Are you managing your money the same way today as you did years ago?

  • Are you assuming that the other person is the one with the hearing problem when YOU are actually the one who’s not listening?

 

How do you find out what you were brought onto this planet to do if all you can do is respond in the same way to whatever is put in front of you?

 

As Howard Schatz, the famous New York dance photographer, stated in one of his books:

“I told each dancer that when it was easy, it had probably been done before, probably many times. I explained that only when it was so hard that it was nearly impossible were we perhaps close to getting something unique and extraordinary.”

 

You will BE all that you desire when you start applying new, more effective solutions to the problems and challenges that come into your life!

 

So I challenge you… I implore you… I beg of you… STEP OUT OF YOUR HISTORY!

 

Anytime you have a thought that is limiting you or makes you feel bad…

QUESTION IT!

STEP OUT OF YOUR HISTORY!

BE YOUR EXTRAORDINARY SELF!

Hello and Thank You for visiting my Blog!

 

It’s a cold, cloudy, rainy day today in North Carolina, USA and yet I woke up feeling energized and filled with SELF motivation and Persistence. In the past, an overcast day had the potential to send me into a state of low energy which would often lead me into throwing myself a nice long pity party.

 

However… it is different now! I am different now! I woke up this morning and – despite the gloominess of my outer environment – I feel happy, energized and filled with SELF motivation to have a productive day.

 

So I began to wonder, what is different? What am I doing on the INSIDE that is automatically causing me to ignore my outer cold, cloudy, rainy environment and to feel sunny, warm and energized on the inside?

 

It has to do with a POWERFUL internal tool I taught myself years ago. It is a tool that has become my #1 most valuable tool for keeping myself filled with naturally high levels of SELF Motivation and PERSISTENCE and I would like to share it with you now.

 

My #1 tool for keeping myself easily and naturally filled with SELF Motivation and PERSISTENCEregardless of what is going on around me — is…

 

QUESTIONS

 

That’s right… QUESTIONS.  But NOT just ANY questions… These are questions that are very specifically crafted for the purpose of compelling your mind TOWARD what you actually DO want.

 

Allow me to explain…

 

Your brain has powerful computer-like qualities and is designed to automatically respond to ANY question asked of it.

Even if the response in your mind is so fleeting that you are not aware of it, your mind always responds to questions by attempting to answer them. Don’t believe me? Consider these questions…

  • Why is the sky blue?

  • Why is the grass green?

  • Why is the earth round?

Did you feel your mind responding to each question? Even if your response was as fleeting as to say, “this is dumb” or “I don’t know” or something more thoughtful such as “the sky isn’t really blue because blah, blah, blah…”.

 

Whether you want it to or not, your mind will ALWAYS automatically respond to any and every question it hears. You have no choice in the matter.

 

So now image that your computer-like brain is programmed with habitual questions such as…

  • What’s the point?

  • What is wrong with me?

  • Why don’t they like me?

  • Why can’t I have what I want?

 

Can you feel your mind being automatically compelled to respond to these questions? What is very significant here is that you will NOT get any RESOURCEFUL answers to questions like these. In fact, your answers will only serve to support getting more of what you DON’T want!

 

These days my mind has an absolute aversion to these types of questions. As I was writing them I could feel myself working to block out both the questions and my mind’s automatic responses by repeating “la la la la la la la“.

 

So… What can you do to leverage this consistent fact about your brain so that you can easily and quickly move yourself toward creating even more of what you DO want? Well… You can USE your mind’s inability to NOT answer a question.

 

If your mind MUST respond to any and all questions posed of it, doesn’t it make sense to program yourself to use questions that automatically compel your mind toward your desired goals?  You bet it does!!!

 

Here are just a few examples of POWERFUL QUESTIONS designed to COMPEL you to move TOWARD the achievement of your goals.

 

Reaching Your Ideal Weight

  • In what ways am I already moving closer and closer to my ideal weight of ____ lbs?

  • What can I do today to move even closer to my ideal weight of ____ lbs?

Doing the Right Work to Create Financial Abundance

  • In what ways am I already doing the right things to attract $____ or more into my life each and every year?

  • What can I do today to more quickly attract and accept $____ or more into my life this year?

Finding Love and Healthy Relationships

  • In what ways am I joyfully attracting my perfect love relationship?

  • In what ways am I already truly worthy of a healthy and happy love relationship?

  • What can I do today to be even more open and receptive to meeting my perfect love partner?

Attracting a New and Happier Career

  • In what ways am I already moving closer and closer to attracting and accepting a wonderful new job in the field ____  that allows me to work from home and earn $____  or more each and every year?

  • In what ways am I already worthy of having a wonderful job in ____  that allows me to work from my home and provides me with the opportunity to earn $____  or more each and every year?

  • What can I do today to find and accept my perfect job in ____  that allows me to work from my home and gives me the opportunity to make $____  or more each and every year?

  • What can I do today to know on an even deeper level that I am worthy of and ready to accept my perfect job in ____  that allows me to work from my home and gives me the opportunity to earn $____  or more each and every year?

Getting Your Perfect Home

  • In what ways am I moving closer and closer to finding and purchasing my perfect home that has __ bedrooms, __ baths,  and ________ ?

  • What can I do today to move even closer to finding and purchasing my perfect home that has __ bedrooms, __ baths,  and ________ ?

 

Are you wondering what questions I have programmed into my own computer-like mind that naturally COMPEL me toward a day filled with SELF Motivation and Persistence?

They are…

  • What do I want to accomplish today?

  • What can I do to make this an energy-filled, happy and productive day?

  • In what ways do I already know how to make this a happy, energy-filled and productive day?

  • In what ways will my being productive today help other people get even more of what they want?

Easiest Procrastination Buster Technique EVER!

Self Sabotage to SELF Motivation! (in less than 5 minutes)

 

Do you use procrastination to avoid doing things that you actually WANT to do?

 

Do you procrastinate things such as…

  • Exercising?

  • Doing the dishes?

  • Writing a report?

  • Making networking or sales prospecting phone calls?

  • Writing articles and blog posts?

  • How about something as seemly simple as putting gas in the car?

Well… you are NOT ALONE.

 

Procrastination is OFTEN the result of your mind being overwhelmed by either too many choices or the inability to see any choices (what I refer to as the “black screen of nothingness in my mind“).

 

I had a very empowering experience the other day that reconnected me with one of the easiest and quickest techniques for Busting through the Procrastination of just about any task you find yourself procrastinating.

 

During the normal course of my day I received an email from one of my favorite writers and writing coaches, Rosanne Bane. She was interviewed by Michael Pollock of Bigger Life Radio and she was letting her subscribers know that the interview was posted.

 

Ordinarily I would put the email in my “To Do Later” file however, on this day I felt compelled to click straight through and listen to the interview.

 

As I listened to the interview I realized that one of the learning techniques Rosanne described is very similar to an NLP (Nerolinguistic Programming) technique that can be used to break free of the procrastination of just about any task you are side-stepping and avoiding.  In fact, I used this Procrastination Buster technique several years ago to break free from my anxiety-ridden procrastination of the simple task of washing the dishes.

 

I used to HATE washing the dishes and could not make myself wash them until they were piled up so high that I could no longer put it off. (Of course, that made it seem like an even more daunting task.) I used this technique and now I easily and naturally wash the dishes every single day. I even have a dish washer and I still mostly wash my dishes by hand. It just seems easier and faster… Wow! I NEVER thought I would feel that way about doing the dishes!!! Simply AMAZING!

 

In this posting I am going to give you an overview and examples of the very effective Procrastination Buster technique I refer to as “Connecting with Disconnected Behaviors“  If you want to learn more about the technique Rosanne discusses known as “Rewarding Approximate Behaviors” I highly encourage you to listen to Rosanne’s full interview on Michael Pollock’s Bigger Life Radio blog.

 


“Connecting with Disconnected Behaviors” to Bust Through Your Procrastination


 

Connecting with Disconnected Behaviors is a simple technique of breaking the starting pieces of your task into elementary-level steps that will quickly and easily disconnect you from your emotional inner self saboteur. (You know… that part of you that SCREEMS “Noooooo… I DON’T WANT TO DO IT!!!!!!!“)

 

So, here’s an example of what it looks like.

 

Let’s say you have a very difficult time getting yourself to wash the dishes. Well, you would take the first few starting pieces of your task and break them down into small, non-emotional steps.

 

Washing Dishes

Step 1: Walk into the kitchen

Step 2: Walk over to the sink

Step 3: Turn on the water

Step 4: Pick up the sponge

Step 5: Wet and soap the sponge

Step 6: Pick up a dish

 

Most of the time procrastination is just about GETTING STARTED on a task – not the actual doing of the task – so this is the point at which your mind will relax and take over the completion of the task.

 

PLEASE… Don’t let the sheer simplicity of this technique fool you into dismissing it.  Try it! You will be AMAZED at how effectively you will begin easily and naturally motivating yourself to complete tasks that once produced lots and lots of anxiety!
