Thomas (you know I never use real names) came to me for help because he was experiencing a serious bout of procrastination.

Thomas is a successful business manager for the local division of a nationally known company.

During the day while he was at work, all he could think about was getting home and working on building his on-line Internet business so he could eventually quit his job and be happily self-employed.

However… on most evenings, once Thomas got home he found himself doing everything BUT working on the development of his business.

Some evenings he would spend hours doing “critically important” things like taking care of the lawn (he could afford to pay for lawn care), cleaning his car (he could also afford to have someone else clean his car) or some other task on his to-do list (most of which he could have paid someone else to do or left undone).

Other evenings he would sit down at the computer with the full intention of working on his business. He would start out on the Internet to conduct some research and then hours later he would realize that he hadn’t done any work toward the actual development of his Internet business.

So off to bed he would go, feeling frustrated, discouraged, defeated and exhausted.

He would go to sleep, get up in the morning and start the cycle all over again.

As we began our work together one thing I already knew about Thomas was that he is mentally and physically capable of building a successful Internet business. What I wasn’t sure of yet was his emotional ability and willingness to allow success to flow into his life.

Procrastination is the poster child for self sabotage behavior and can be the result of a variety of internal barriers and negative beliefs so I knew we had to begin with some investigative work.

We used the Break Free from Self Sabotage Behavior™ step-by-step process to look for the hidden beliefs he may be harboring that would sabotage his motivation to do the work.

Here are a few of the potential hidden beliefs we tested for…

  • “It’s not OK to have a lot of money.”
  • “If I have a lot of money people will criticize and reject me.”
  • “People will be jealous of me if I make a lot of money.”
  • “There’s already too much competition out there so I could never be successful.”
  • “If I try and I fail, people will secretly laugh behind my back.”
  • “I’m supposed to do what is right for my family – not what is right for me.”
  • “If I try to start my own business I will end up working 24/7 and I will become a slave to my work.” and BINGO! This is the hidden belief that was doing a very good job of sabotaging Thomas’ efforts to create his own business!

Over the years of hard work and long hours in developing his own career and watching the tedious progression of his friends’ careers, he had grown to believe that the ONLY way to get ahead was to become a slave to the work.

Well… first, I like that Thomas understands that in order to be successful you MUST DO THE WORK, however, his belief of becoming a slave to his work was not serving him in a positive way at all.

This particular belief had the positive intention of making sure that Thomas knew what he was getting into – and – trying to “pump him up” to do the work! While the intention may have been positive, the actual result was to deflate his sense of motivation and to make him feel defeated before he even got started!

As Thomas and I progressed through the Break Free from Self Sabotage Behavior™ step-by-step process he began to see that it was actually the time he spent PROCRASTINATING doing the work that felt exhausting to him – not the actual work itself!  When he actually did do the work toward developing his business plan he felt elated and motivated to do even more.

So we set out to untangle the ineffective beliefs about building a successful business and we installed new, more effective beliefs that were in complete alignment with how Thomas wants to live his life.

We established new beliefs – as well as new internal strategies – that actually compel him to DO the work so he will have plenty of time left over for fun family activities. Later, he reported that he was also doing much better at his job because now he knows to TRUST that he will DO the work when he gets home and that he will happily make progress toward his success every single day.

Self Sabotage: Joseph is a Perfectionist

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Joseph (not his real name) came to me because his “Need for Perfection” was stressing him out and alienating him from his employees.

As the owner of a small manufacturing company, Joseph felt that the only way to keep his company afloat in these difficult economic times was to make certain that EVERYTHING they did was absolutely “PERFECT”.

Joseph spent much of each day inspecting the work of others and often having them re-do things two or three times. Unfortunately, Joseph was constantly changing his definition of “PERFECT” which meant that, for his employees, “PERFECT” was always a moving target.

As the busy owner of the company, he didn’t feel like he had the time to be overly concerned with the thoughts and feelings of the people who worked for him – he just knew that everything HAD to be done “PERFECTLY”. It wasn’t that he didn’t care about their feelings – it was that he felt he HAD to make sure everything was done “PERFECTLY”.

Joseph spent much of his day micromanaging everyone else’s work, so he typically spent his evenings doing his own work and this daily routine was wearing thin and stressing him out.

As Joseph and I began our work together he explained to me that he KNEW his employees were very smart and capable people, but his driving need for “PERFECT” was making everyone very unhappy and he was possibly in jeopardy of losing some of his best employees if he didn’t find a way to lighten up.

It was pretty clear that what Joseph does NOT want is for his business to fail. I know this with certainty because – in an attempt to justify his need for perfection – he spent a good amount of time telling me the bad things that might happen if they don’t do everything “PERFECTLY”.

However…what was NOT clear was what Joseph DOES want.  So I began my work with Joseph by taking him through a process to help him get authentically clear about what he DOES want.

In getting clear on an authentic level about what he DOES WANT, we could then go through the process of uncovering Joseph’s inner beliefs that were out of alignment with what he wants.

We uncovered that Joseph had a very strong internal belief in his ability to BUILD a successful business, however he also harbored an equally strong internal belief that he did NOT have what it takes to MAINTAIN that level of success.  This ineffective belief was “trying” to push him to work harder to maintain his company’s success however; all it was really doing was causing him to sabotage his success thereby creating a self-fulfilling prophecy that – indeed – he didn’t have the ability to maintain his success long-term. (Oh what a web we weave!)

What was really cool about this work with Joseph was that, in getting clear about what he DOES want, we automatically uncovered the authentic intention behind his negative belief. (It was –ineffectively– trying to help him to maintain his success by motivating and pushing him to work harder and harder.)

Our final step was to find new, more effective inner beliefs that will motivate Joseph in a positive and effective manner to joyfully go about the business of maintaining his company’s success. We used the Break Free from Self Sabotage Behavior™ step-by-step process to install his new beliefs and Joseph reported an immediate change in his inner energy and his inner feelings about his work.
