Thomas (you know I never use real names) came to me for help because he was experiencing a serious bout of procrastination.

Thomas is a successful business manager for the local division of a nationally known company.

During the day while he was at work, all he could think about was getting home and working on building his on-line Internet business so he could eventually quit his job and be happily self-employed.

However… on most evenings, once Thomas got home he found himself doing everything BUT working on the development of his business.

Some evenings he would spend hours doing “critically important” things like taking care of the lawn (he could afford to pay for lawn care), cleaning his car (he could also afford to have someone else clean his car) or some other task on his to-do list (most of which he could have paid someone else to do or left undone).

Other evenings he would sit down at the computer with the full intention of working on his business. He would start out on the Internet to conduct some research and then hours later he would realize that he hadn’t done any work toward the actual development of his Internet business.

So off to bed he would go, feeling frustrated, discouraged, defeated and exhausted.

He would go to sleep, get up in the morning and start the cycle all over again.

As we began our work together one thing I already knew about Thomas was that he is mentally and physically capable of building a successful Internet business. What I wasn’t sure of yet was his emotional ability and willingness to allow success to flow into his life.

Procrastination is the poster child for self sabotage behavior and can be the result of a variety of internal barriers and negative beliefs so I knew we had to begin with some investigative work.

We used the Break Free from Self Sabotage Behavior™ step-by-step process to look for the hidden beliefs he may be harboring that would sabotage his motivation to do the work.

Here are a few of the potential hidden beliefs we tested for…

  • “It’s not OK to have a lot of money.”
  • “If I have a lot of money people will criticize and reject me.”
  • “People will be jealous of me if I make a lot of money.”
  • “There’s already too much competition out there so I could never be successful.”
  • “If I try and I fail, people will secretly laugh behind my back.”
  • “I’m supposed to do what is right for my family – not what is right for me.”
  • “If I try to start my own business I will end up working 24/7 and I will become a slave to my work.” and BINGO! This is the hidden belief that was doing a very good job of sabotaging Thomas’ efforts to create his own business!

Over the years of hard work and long hours in developing his own career and watching the tedious progression of his friends’ careers, he had grown to believe that the ONLY way to get ahead was to become a slave to the work.

Well… first, I like that Thomas understands that in order to be successful you MUST DO THE WORK, however, his belief of becoming a slave to his work was not serving him in a positive way at all.

This particular belief had the positive intention of making sure that Thomas knew what he was getting into – and – trying to “pump him up” to do the work! While the intention may have been positive, the actual result was to deflate his sense of motivation and to make him feel defeated before he even got started!

As Thomas and I progressed through the Break Free from Self Sabotage Behavior™ step-by-step process he began to see that it was actually the time he spent PROCRASTINATING doing the work that felt exhausting to him – not the actual work itself! When he actually did do the work toward developing his business plan he felt elated and motivated to do even more.

So we set out to untangle the ineffective beliefs about building a successful business and we installed new, more effective beliefs that were in complete alignment with how Thomas wants to live his life.

We established new beliefs – as well as new internal strategies – that actually compel him to DO the work so he will have plenty of time left over for fun family activities. Later, he reported that he was also doing much better at his job because now he knows to TRUST that he will DO the work when he gets home and that he will happily make progress toward his success every single day.
